The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris begin on Friday, with more than 10,000 athletes competing in 32 sports.
The vast majority of the competitions take place in Paris, usually within a 5km radius of the Olympic Village.
Several events are held in or next to iconic Paris landmarks.
Beach volleyball is held next to the Eiffel Tower, fencing and taekwondo are held under the Grand Palais, and cycling, marathon swimming and triathlon take place on the Pont Alexandre III bridge.
Outside Paris
Some event locations are located outside the French capital.
The football tournament will take place in six locations: Nantes, Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nice and Saint-Etienne.
All the shooting finals are held at the shooting centre of Chateauroux, about two hours from Paris. The sailing competitions are held in Marseille, in the south of the country.
From Paris to the Pacific Ocean
There is one event that takes place much further away from the action: all surfing events are held in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, about 15,700 km from the French capital.
It is one of the furthest Olympic venues ever located from the host city.
The equestrian events at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics were held in Stockholm, Sweden, about the same distance as Paris and Tahiti, due to quarantine laws.
The island in French Polynesia — — was chosen as the surfing location for the 2020 Paris Olympics after alternatives in France were rejected.
According to the Paris Olympics, the Teahupo’o wave is unique and “must be seen to be believed”.
“Teahupo’o is a wave like no other: a thick barrel-shaped wave that breaks partly below sea level.”
This is the second time surfing has been featured as an Olympic sport,
However, the infrastructure built for the Paris surfing events is controversial. The residents of Teahupo’o protested the construction of jury towers at the surf spot, which they say threatens the local ecosystem.
Despite significant opposition, including a Change.org petition that garnered more than 250,000 signatures, a three-story aluminum tower was built on the reef.
