Normally, professional athletes go to great lengths to avoid potential controversy when speaking to reporters.
But in another sign of a struggling season for the Toronto Blue Jays, star forward Bo Bichette appeared to openly flirt with the idea of playing for a team like the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
“I haven’t really explored the city yet. For me, I want to win first and foremost. That would be my No. 1 priority if I was picking a team, and the Giants are clearly committed to that,” Bichette told NBC Sports San Francisco in a clip that made the rounds on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“They are in a position to get the right type of players and I think that’s the most important thing.”
“That guy is basically begging to be traded”
Baseball fans seemed surprised by Bichette’s comments.
“This is insane. … Dude is basically begging to get traded here! When is that going to happen???” X user @SFGiantsGuy_ wrote in part on Wednesday.

X user @LeafErikzen was also critical.
“How can one of your star players go on another network and say how much he wants to play for an organization like the Giants?” they wrote, in part.
“This team continues to find new, hilarious ways to make fools of themselves.”
With Major League Baseball’s trade deadline set for July 30, Bichette isn’t the only Jays player making waves by toying with the idea of playing for another team.
Last month, star baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took a somewhat softer stance on playing for the New York Yankees, a rival team he once swore he would never play for.
“Sometimes you say things. It’s not like I’m trying to take back what I said about the Yankees,” Guerrero said Sports viruswhich ESPN reported on June 25th.
Guerrero said he would “never sign with the Yankees — even dead” in 2022, but he reiterated those comments in 2023, telling the New York Post it was a personal matter with his family.
But last month he said, “This is a business,” ESPN reported.
“I sat down and talked to my father (Vladimir Guerrero Sr.) and my family, and this is a business. And I said I would never talk about this topic again and a lot of people have asked me about it.”
Despite beating the Giants 10-6 on Wednesday, it was a season to forget for the Jays.
A poor win-loss record, a prospect receiving a lengthy suspension shortly after making his MLB debut, a pitcher’s move that went viral for all the wrong reasons and a dramatic loss to the Boston Red Sox are just some of the lowlights.
The Jays will try to win the three-game series against the Giants on Thursday.
The first match is scheduled for 3:45 PM (Eastern Time).
