The public safety committee is calling for an emergency meeting on the RCMP’s allegations against India

The Federal Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security has unanimously called for an emergency meeting on the investigation into the Indian government’s alleged covert operations in Canada, says MP Alistair MacGregor.

A spokesperson for the commission said in an email Wednesday that the meeting is expected to take place Friday morning.

Members of the standing committee wrote in a letter Tuesday that the RCMP’s revelations are “very alarming.” They asked for time to discuss “steps the government could take to protect Canadians and our country.”

On Monday, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme alleged links between Indian government agents and “widespread violence” in Canada, including murders and “well over a dozen” threats against members of the Indian Canadian community, particularly Sikh members.

The committee request comes after NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh told reporters Tuesday he wanted a parliamentary committee to investigate how to protect Canadians from threats from India.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that the government had expelled six Indian diplomats after New Delhi had refused to cooperate in criminal investigations.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling for an emergency meeting of the public safety committee to investigate the RCMP’s claim that Indian government agents are involved in crimes in Canada.
