Residents can now recycle more plastic items in their burgundy bins
Plastic pots, tubs, trays and boxes can now be recycled in Bolton for the first time
Bolton Council’s waste and recycling service accepts most pots, tubs, trays and boxes in the burgundy bin.
Common examples include fruit juice cartons, yogurt containers, ice cream/butter/margarine containers and clear plastic containers for meat, fruit and vegetables.
All items must be emptied and rinsed.
The recycling changes are in line with the rest of Greater Manchester.
Household items that are recyclable in the burgundy bin include:
• Plastic containers (yogurt, soup, hair gel, etc.)
• Plastic containers (margarine, washing powder, chocolates, etc.)
• Plastic containers in any color (raw and cooked meat, fruit and vegetable containers, etc.)
• Plastic bottles (milk, soft drinks, cleaning products, shampoo, etc.)
• Glass bottles and jars
• Food cans and beverage cans
However, there are still some items that should still go in the regular (grey) bin:
• Plastic bags
• Plastic foil
• Bubble wrap
• Crispy parcels

Big change in what people can recycle in Greater Manchester
Cllr Richard Silvester, Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said:
“As a council we are committed to doing all we can locally to tackle the climate change crisis.
“From a recycling point of view, we are performing well as a municipality: our recycling rate is 49.5%, with the national average at 43.3%, and we want to continue this success.
“I would also like to remind residents that all recyclable plastic must be emptied and rinsed before being placed in the burgundy bin.”
