Passerby stops sexual assault on child in Pukatawagan – Winnipeg

A man who was out walking in Pukatawagan on Tuesday evening tackled another man after catching him sexually abusing a child.

Manitoba RCMP say the passerby was walking in a wooded area when he saw the attack. The passerby freed the young girl, who then fled.

The suspect then threatened the passerby with a knife, but the passerby was able to get away and call for help. RCMP arrested the suspect shortly after and say the man who interrupted is a hero.

“This individual stumbled upon this, quickly figured out what was going on, and put himself in harm’s way to save a child,” said Tara Seel, media officer with Manitoba RCMP. “So yes, he’s a hero.”

Mounties found the young girl, who was under 10 years old. She was taken to a hospital in Winnipeg. It was determined she was walking along a path when 28-year-old Kyle Dumas attacked her.

“Our hearts go out to this poor young girl and her family,” Seel said. “We’re just relieved that we were able to take someone into custody so quickly so the community doesn’t have to look at this anymore.”

Dumas is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, sexual assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with orders not to have contact with a person under the age of 16 unless under the supervision of a person deemed appropriate by the court. He remains in custody.

According to the Manitoba RCMP, Dumas and the passerby were unknown to the youths.
