Paddy McGuinness’ new TV show explores secrets to longevity

Paddy McGuinness, 51, and Chris Harris, 49, from Bolton, will return to television screens for the BBC programme Paddy And Chris: Road Tripping, which airs on BBC One at 8pm on September 29.

The duo, who previously starred together in the car show Top Gear, travel through Sweden, Greece and Switzerland to discover the secrets of a long and full life.

Along the way, they try out roller coasters, surfing, forest workouts and cosmetic treatments as they explore how Europeans age gracefully.

In the three-part series, the two also meet some of the longest-living people in the world.

The duo share what they learned about each other in the new series and what viewers can expect:

TELL US ABOUT THE NEW SERIES

Paddy McGuinness (PM): “Chris and I are going on a road trip around Europe together (with not much room in our vehicle, I should add). We’re on a mission to discover all the different ways our continental neighbours are ageing gracefully. We’re at a point in our lives where we want to make the most of our next few years, so we’re trying out as many experiences as possible to learn how some of the oldest and best preserved people on the planet do it!”

Chris Harris (CH): “Paddy and I are going to Europe in search of the secrets of living a long and full life. Plus, we have to deal with being on top of each other for the whole road trip… so it’s going to be entertaining!”

WHAT EXPERIENCES HAVE YOU GAINED ALONG THE WAY?

PM: “We really tried to tap into both the traditional and modern methods of ‘good living’ practiced by each of the countries we visited. From Swedish saunas to goat milking, rock climbing and even a visit to a ‘Gentleman’s clinic’… you name it and we try it!”

CH: “We try to get under the skin of each country we visit and delve deep into the secrets of human longevity. We embrace nature in Sweden, go surfing and rock climbing on the Greek island of Ikaria and attend a ‘Gentleman’s Clinic’ in Switzerland, learning a lot about ourselves along the way.”

BECAUSE IT’S A ROAD TRIP, LET’S TALK ABOUT THE RADIO AND WHAT KIND OF MUSIC YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO

PM: “You can’t beat a bit of Johnny Cash on a road trip. Luckily for Chris, he was also travelling with Bolton’s best karaoke artist, so the hours on the road flew by!”

CH: “Unfortunately I don’t get radio airplay when Paddy is around, so I was stuck with his awful playlist of 80s power ballads, complete with Paddy himself singing along.”

YOUR REGULAR ROAD TRIP SNACKS?

PM: “Mini Cheddars… and a Fry’s Peppermint Cream, yes please!”

CH: “There was no point in buying anything I liked for the road trip because Paddy almost always gets there before me! He once threw my mint humbugs out the window, which I still haven’t forgiven him for. I made him pull over so I could go get them.”

YOUR ESSENTIAL TRAVEL ITEMS?

PM: “It has to be the holiday swimming trunks. I’m not talking about the usual ‘just popping down to the local leisure centre’ ones, but the brightly coloured, patterned swimming trunks that only come out once a year in an attempt to outshine all the other dads at the hotel pool.”

CH: “I think the most valuable item I take with me when I travel with Mr. McGuinness is definitely earplugs!”

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT EACH OTHER DURING THIS TRIP?

PM: “I could go on and on about the enigma that is Chris Harris, but besides all the laughter and banter, we’re really learning a lot about ourselves and each other on this trip, which has been an eye-opener. However, I’ve also learned that Chris has terrible taste in music and should never be allowed to control the car stereo again!”

CH: “Paddy and I have been good friends for years and we have spent a lot of time together, so I thought I knew him pretty well. But this soul searching has definitely changed us, we have learned a lot about each other and ourselves. It was great to experience that with Paddy.”

HAVE YOU NOTED DOWN ANY LIFESTYLE TIPS OR DECIDED TO CHANGE YOUR OWN PLAN AS A RESULT OF YOUR TRIP?

PM: “Taking our health seriously is something we’ve both learned. We’re not as young as we once were, and science absolutely tells us that!”

CH: “I learned a lot about my own health during the trip, some things really shocked me, so I will definitely take the advice I got with me. I also learned that life is for living, so I plan to do a lot of that too!”

DID YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE?

PM: “I really enjoyed the experiences on the Greek island of Ikaria. I saw people leaving all the complications of modern life and technology behind and just going out and enjoying everything that life has to offer.”

CH: “I think the slower pace and ‘simple attitude’ of the people on the Greek island of Ikaria was really inspiring.”

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF DURING THE SHOW?

PM: “There are moments when we both really take stock of ourselves and think about how we can make the best of the years ahead of us.”

CH: “I’ve learned that there are definitely things I can change about my lifestyle to improve my health.”
