An 11-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a stabbing attack in central London is Australian, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said.
The girl was stabbed eight times during the ‘random attack’ on Monday when a man approached her and her mother in Leicester Square.
She was taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police said Monday.
It was initially thought that the girl’s 34-year-old mother was also injured, but police said blood from her daughter’s injuries was mistaken for her own.
DFAT confirmed on Wednesday that it was providing consular assistance to two Australians in London. The family is believed to be from NSW, the ABC reported.
A 32-year-old man appeared in court Tuesday accused of attempting to murder a young girl in what prosecutors said was a “random attack.”
Ioan Pintaru was also charged with possession of a stabbing weapon after the girl was stabbed eight times on Monday afternoon in Leicester Square, a central London tourist attraction with shops and theatres.
“The suspect approached the 11-year-old girl, placed her in a headlock and then stabbed her eight times in the body,” Burns said.
She suffered injuries to her face, shoulder, wrist and neck, he said.
The court heard that members of the public intervened and when police arrived they found a man on the ground being held down.
According to the police, there are no indications that the attack is related to terrorism.
