Hockey Canada’s report highlights the need for more professional development in women’s hockey

A recent report from Hockey Canada shows that more support is needed for women and girls in sports.

Currently, approximately 108,313 women and girls are enrolled in Hockey Canada-approved programs, representing just 20 percent of enrollments nationwide.

Issues such as persistent negative stereotypes, “inconsistencies with governance and program implementation” and resource allocation were highlighted.

Elizabeth Ballinger, who has been playing for 13 years, says the growth has been exciting to be a part of.

“I played on a boys team for a few years and we were always stuck in the broom closet … or in the referee’s room with no working lights,” Ballinger said. “There are so many girls I get to play with and I’m always excited to be on their lines and work with them.”

Krista Pell, from Girls Hockey Calgary, says increased representation is another important boost for women and girls. The newly formed Professional Women’s Hockey League and Canadian Jessica Campbell behind the bench at the Seattle Kraken are making a big difference by showing players they can dream big in the sport.

“You start looking at opportunities,” Pell explains. “Scholarships, these are real opportunities for young female athletes to go to school and develop a career across Canada and the U.S.”

Hockey Canada plans to initiate public consultations and get feedback from athletes, coaching staff and fans on what types of improvements can be made. Their findings will be made public in mid-2025.
