Birmingham City ask to play Wrexham clash ‘in the US’

Birmingham wanted to bring the match against Wrexham to the United States Mailsport.

The Blues were taken over by an American group last summer, while Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been in charge at the Racecourse Ground in recent years.

Birmingham are preparing for life in the third tier after being relegated from the Championship on the final day despite victory against Norwich.

Gary Rowett took interim charge of the side during the final weeks of the campaign, while Tony Mowbray had left the sport to undergo medical treatment.

Chris Davies, who was Ange Postecoglou’s assistant at Tottenham last season as Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League, has since been appointed as the new permanent boss at St Andrew’s.

NFL legend Tom Brady is also a minority investor in Birmingham and holds several positions, including working with the sports science department.

Meanwhile, Wrexham are preparing for the move after back-to-back promotions from the National League under former Wanderers boss Phil Parkinson.

The Red Dragons finished second in League Two last season, behind only Stockport, to continue their meteoric rise.

The full League One fixture list will be confirmed at 9am on Wednesday morning, with the upcoming season starting on the weekend of August 10.

The potential of domestic matches being played abroad has been a hot topic in the Premier League in recent months.

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner recently voiced his support for a match in New York, suggesting British fans could be compensated with cheap travel and accommodation.
