New holiday 'planned' to commemorate major anniversary

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in Europe, which falls on May 5.

As part of the commemorations, millions of people will remember the moment the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany was accepted by the Allies in 1945.

While August 15, 2025 will also mark 80 years since Victory Day over Japan, when global hostilities effectively ended in 1945.

The two anniversaries mark opportunities for additional time off to commemorate, and an announcement of the additional holiday could be imminent.

The Daily Express reports that the government has not yet decided which weekend will be extended to four days, but says there will be an announcement about the plans at some point.
