Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke with the new US President Donald Trump after his election victory.
Albanese wrote to X on Thursday morning to confirm that he had personally congratulated Trump in a phone call in which they also discussed the importance of the Australia-United States alliance.
He said they also discussed “the strength of the Australia-US relationship across security, AUKUS, trade and investment”.
“I look forward to working together in the interest of both our countries,” Albanese wrote on X.

This comes after Trump's stronger-than-expected victory after Americans cast their votes on Wednesday (AEDT). Polls showed him tied with Democratic rival Kamala Harris .
Trump, who will become the 47th US president, is expected to win the necessary 270 Electoral College votes and is also currently leading the popular vote. Harris (AEDT).
Republicans are too but the House of Representatives is still up for grabs.
Earlier Thursday morning, Albanese told reporters that his administration would work closely with Trump's administration if it is sworn in.
“I look forward to speaking with President Trump and working with him for the benefit of both our countries,” he said.
“President Trump has run a campaign based on change and he has made it clear that he will do things differently, so we should not be surprised if things change. But we must also have real confidence in ourselves and our place in the world as well, and our ability to advance our interests together as Australians.”
Albanians have never met the incoming leader, and in 2017, when Trump was the 45th US president, he said he “scared the hell out of him”.
The possibility of a Trump election had been raised previously Australia's largest trading partner.
But Albanians and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have indicated the Australia-US alliance will remain strong, despite policy differences likely to emerge.
“It is an alliance that throughout history has had times when leaders and governments have been at odds,” Wong told ABC Radio on Thursday.
'The previous Trump administration withdrew from global climate agreements, but we did not do that.
“We will continue to work with the new government and the alliance is large enough and strong enough to deal with differences. Ultimately, we share a high degree of alignment in strategic objectives.”
Opposition leader Peter Dutton also congratulated the Republican leader on behalf of the federal coalition.
He described the US as an “overwhelming force for good” and stated that the world was at its best when Australia's close ally was strong and at its best.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Donald Trump on his election victory and said he would try to “work together” to strengthen the economies and security of both countries.
“The friendship between Canada and the US is the envy of the world,” Trudeau X posted next to a photo of the two during Trump's previous term as president.
“I know that President Trump and I will work together to create greater opportunity, prosperity and security for both of our countries.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was “the greatest comeback in history,” and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir tweeted: “Yesssss, God bless Trump.”
Netanyahu further said: “Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a strong renewed commitment to the grand alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge win! In true friendship.”
