The pub quiz is believed to have originated with a company called Burns and Porter, who shared their quizzes with others in the 1970s to attract more regular visitors.

The regular pub quizzes saw the number of participants increase from 30 teams per week to a peak of 10,000 teams.

Burns and Porter continued to publish their own series of pub quiz books and continued to host weekly quizzes.
