After two weeks of sporting spectacle, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games are almost coming to an end.
More than 10,000 athletes from 206 countries took part in 32 sports during the Games, winning hundreds of medals and countless hearts.
For Australia it is with the women and men in green and gold breaking records and winning the largest number of gold medals ever.
Here’s what to expect during the closing ceremony.
When is the closing ceremony?
The closing ceremony begins on Sunday, August 11 at 8:00 p.m. (local time) in Paris.
That means anyone in Australia who wants to see it live will have to get up early on Monday, August 12:
- NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, ACT — 04:00 am AEST
- South Australia, Northern Territory — 03:30 hrs ACST
- Western Australia – 2 hours AWST
How can I watch it?
Nine Network is the official Australian broadcaster of the Olympic Games. That means you can watch the Closing Ceremony for free on Channel 9 and 9Gem.
If you prefer a group feel, you can attend the event at one of the official live venues, such as Federation Square in Melbourne.
You can also stream the closing ceremony live or on-demand on 9Now and Stan Sport.
What can I expect?
Other than which took place on the River Seine, the closing ceremony will take place on the mainland at the Stade de France.
As usual, there will be a parade of athletes, a medal ceremony and a thank you to the volunteers.
Kaylee McKeown and Matt Wearn, who both won gold medals at this year’s Games, will lead the Australian delegation as flag bearers at the closing ceremony.
The Olympic flame will also be extinguished and the flag lowered before being handed over to the host of the 2028 Summer Olympics, Los Angeles.
According to entertainment magazine Variety, that portion of the closing ceremony is expected to consist of a mix of pre-recorded and live performances in LA from Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Actor Tom Cruise is also rumored to be making an appearance, after website TMZ reported that the Mission Impossible star had filmed stunts in both Paris and LA.
The rest of the entertainment programme for the closing ceremony has not yet been announced. According to the organisers, a ‘visual spectacle’ called Record will take place with more than 100 artists, acrobats, dancers and circus performers.
They have also hinted at performances by ‘world famous singers’, but have not yet announced who they will be.
When do the Paralympic Games start?
If you’re looking for more elite sport, the Paralympic Games start on August 28 local time (August 29 Australian time) in Paris and run until September 8 (September 9 Australian time).
Who will host the next Olympic and Paralympic Games?
Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy will host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games from 6 to 22 February 2026.
The next Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles from July 14 to 30, 2028.
In 2032 it will be It is the third time that the Olympic Games are held on Australian soil.
