This week, youth hockey players from U15 to U23 across Saskatoon will light the lights during the Canadian Junior Ball Hockey Nationals.
Meanwhile, others, like Team Saskatchewan U17 goalie Ava Timm, are determined to keep the ball out of the net at all costs.
Timm is part of the Team Sask. team that is making history on their home field. They are the first players from the province to play at the girls U17 level, after playing together for about three months.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for girls to finally have a hockey team here in Saskatchewan and just be able to play against each other,” Timm said. “We’ve never had anything like this before.”
Saskatchewan currently does not have a dedicated girls hockey league in the province, but according to the junior team’s coaching staff, the doors are starting to open.
“We have girls from all over,” said Team Sask U17 coach Nikki Loewen. “We wanted to make sure we didn’t just stick with the girls that were local here. For the competition, for what we’re building in Saskatchewan, we’re super excited to see that talent pool continue to develop.”

The aim is to use this new junior programme as a springboard for older age groups, supporting the growth of girls’ sport across the province.
“It’s so exciting to see that there’s actually a pretty big future for ball hockey players,” said Team Sask U17 forward Kinley Brassard. “Being a great representative for younger generations is incredible.”
The Canadian Junior Ball Hockey Nationals will be held at Merlis Belsher Place and the Henk Ruys Soccer Centre through Saturday.
